Their sound incorporates elements of popelectronicadance, and rock, along with many other genres like reggae and trad. jazz. Their 2005's debut albumA Fever You Can't Sweat Out, reached #13 on the US Billboard 200, and has sold over 2.2 million copies since its September 2005 release, with the hits "I Write Sins Not Tragedies" and "But It's Better If You Do". The band's second album, Pretty. Odd., was released on March 252008. The album's first single, "Nine in the Afternoon", was released on January 292008The band was formed in the suburban area of Summerlin, Las Vegas, by the two childhood friends Ryan Ross on the guitar and Spencer Smith on the drums.
